"After the Appraisal..." A Panel Discussion

CMM-based appraisals are now an integral part of Software Process Improvement ( SPI) initiatives in several organizations. Panelists from Advanced Information Services Inc., Motorola, and Tellabs will describe what happened to their SPI efforts after the appraisal. The presentations will provide answers to frequently asked questions regarding appraisals:

• How accurate are the appraisals?
  Do they identify significant problem areas?
  Do they identify strengths as well as problems?
• How actionable are the findings / recommendations from the appraisals?
  Are SPI efforts based on most or all of the recommendations?
  Does the CMM provide valuable direction about the order in which improvement should be made?
  Are the recommendations too ambitious to accomplish in a reasonable amount of time?
• What is the extent of success in addressing findings and recommendations?
• What are the key factors for successful SPI and CMM-based appraisals?
• What are the barriers?
